The invention relates to a winding method and machine that receives a continuous flow of flat flexible elements (10) which are aligned longitudinally and which partially overlap one another. The invention is used to form a coil (6) by winding the aforementioned elements spirally around a drum (8) and inserting a central flexible band (26) between the turns, one end of said band being fixed to the drum and the other end thereof being unwound simultaneously from a spindle (60) around which the band was pre-wound. The invention is characterised in that the machine also comprises a motorised means (54) for adjusting the transverse position of the spindle (60), thereby enabling a lateral movement in relation to the coil (6) such that the band (26) is always aligned during winding.
