An apparatus and a method for automatically muting a remote controller of a video device are provided to detect an image noise of a screen in order to sense channel switching when a user switches a current channel to another channel, and temporarily mute an output of a sound signal transmitted to the remote controller, thereby preventing a noise from being outputted to a speaker. A remote controller(40) outputs a wirelessly received sound signal to a speaker. A video device body(30) receives a video signal of a certain channel and displays video corresponding to the video signal on a screen and wirelessly transmits a sound signal of the video to the remote controller. The video device body temporarily blocks the sound signal from being transmitted to the remote controller while channel switching is carried out.
