A projective display apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to solve a problem that a no-signal area is recognized as a dark image in various screen size modes and thereby screen brightness is unexpectedly lowered. An optical power control unit(305) controls optical power for displaying an image. A control unit(304) judges a valid image area of the image and an invalid image area thereof based on luminance of a received video signal. The control unit controls the optical power control unit according to an average luminance value of the valid image area. The control unit compares the luminance of the received video signal with reference luminance by pixels and judges a corresponding pixel as the valid image area or the invalid image area according to a result of the comparison. |
