[Class 9 (i)] The detonator 4 of a hand grenade is mounted on a plate 2 carried by a longitudinal spindle 1, and the firing pin 9 is carried by a mass 7 which is slidably mounted on the spindle and which is urged towards the detonator by a spring or springs 8. Further, the pin is normally prevented from striking the detonator by a tube 27 on a lever 24 which is automatically swung aside to uncover the detonator when the pin is withdrawn from the tube by centrifugal force when the grenade is whirled before throwing. In the construction shown, the disengagement of the firing pin from the tube, during transport, is provented by pins 22 which limit the outward movement of the mass 7. These pins are carried by a body 18 mounted in the cap 17 of the grenade. Before the grenade is thrown the body 18 is pulled by hand to a position in which spring-urged balls 20 carried thereby fit into an outer recess 21 of the cap. In this position, the pins 22 are out of the path of the mass 7. When the grenade is whirled, the mass is urged outwardly against the action of the springs 8 and is temporarily held in this outward position by spring-pressed balls which engage in recesses 11 of the spindle 1. The firing pin is then clear of the tube 27 and the lever 24 is urged by a spring 26 to a position in which the detonator is uncovered. The lever normally constitutes an abutment for a locking pin 6 actuated by a thumb-piece 31 but, when rotated by the spring 26, is moved clear of the pin. If, after whirling, the grenade is not thrown the locking pin is moved by the thumb-piece to a position in which it forms an abutment for a pin 10 on the mass 7 and thus prevents the firing pin from striking the detonator. |
