[Class 39 (i)] A discharge device has a metal envelope, the internal surface of which, and especially the surface exposed to the discharge, is oxidized to increase the thermal absorption of the envelope. A mercury tube comprises an envelope 19, the ends of which are sealed by stepped headers 21 ; the internal surface above the line 37 is oxidized. A cooling jacket 18 is provided and glass insulators 23, 29 support the anode 22 and the semi-conducting starting electrode 27. In another form, the surface of the envelope of a thermionic valve may be oxidized ; it may consist of steel and is oxidized while filled with air and is subsequently exhausted.
