PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently racemize an optically active amine by treating a specific amine compound with a catalytic reduction catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) An optically active amine of the formula [R<1> is a (substituted) aryl or a (substituted) heterocyclic group; R<2> is a (substituted) 1-8C alkyl, a (substituted) 1-8C alkoxy or a (substituted) aryl or a (substituted) heterocyclic group; R<3> and R<4> are each H or a (substituted) 1-4C alkyl; A is a 1-10C alkylene; * is the position of an asymmetric carbon atom] (e. g. optically active 3-methyl-2-phenylbutylamine) is treated with (B) a catalytic reduction catalyst. Preferably, the reaction is carried out in the absence of hydrogen and in the presence of ammonia and a Raney catalyst such as a Raney nickel catalyst or a Raney cobalt catalyst. |
