A complex electrode fluorescent lamp and a direct emission type backlight unit having the same are provided to use no external electrode fluorescent lamp additively, by manufacturing the complex electrode fluorescent lamp to have a characteristic of cold cathode fluorescent lamp and a characteristic of external electrode fluorescent lamp complexly. A tube(111) has a U-shaped loop portion(118). A fluorescent layer is formed on the inner wall of the tube, and a discharge gas is injected into the tube. Cold cathode electrodes(112,113) are formed at both ends of the tube. An external electrode(120) is disposed on the outer surface of the tube, especially the outer surface of the loop portion of the tube. The loop portion is positioned at the center of the tube in a longitudinal direction. |
