An ignition electrode, which is permanently immersed in the liquid cathode to facilitate starting of the arc in an electric discharge device, is composed mainly or wholly of a homogeneous compound of titanium oxide with one or more of the oxides of barium, strontium or calcium, the compound having the perowskite structure and containing rather less oxygen than corresponds to the normal stoichiometric ratio. A mixture of titanium dioxide and alkaline earths may be heated for 30-60 minutes to 1500-1800 DEG C. in hydrogen. To obtain a fine structure the mixture may be heated in air at a low temperature and is then partially reduced at a higher temperature. |
