FIELD: energy absorbing materials used in systems for protecting from damages which might occur owing to strikes. ^ SUBSTANCE: self-sustaining energy absorbing composite material comprises matrix of solid foamed synthetic polymer, polymer-based dilatant different from material of matrix, distributed within said matrix and introduced therein during manufacturing process, and fluid material distributed within matrix. Combination of matrix, dilatant and fluid material is selected so as to render elastic compressibility feature to composite material. Also described is self-sustained energy absorbing material comprising solid foamed matrix with closed cells, polymer-based dilatant different from material of matrix and distributed within matrix, and fluid material distributed within matrix. Combination of matrix, dilatant and fluid material is selected so as to render elastic compressibility feature to composite material.
