A digital recording system and a recording method therefor are provided to reduce the recording capacity of a recording medium by generating a menu picture for selecting the video and audio importance of a recorded object when record image quality is selected in record and controlling a compression rate according to the video and audio recording importance by the request of a user. A menu generating unit(106) generates a menu OSD(On Screen Display) picture for selecting record image quality in record and selecting the importance of video or audio. A microcomputer(108) performs a control operation to select predetermined video and audio compression rates according to record image quality selected in response to a record image quality selection key signal corresponding to the menu OSD picture and record the video and the audio. When the video is important, a VDR(Video Disk Record) system(104) lowers the predetermined video compression rate, and heightens the predetermined audio compression rate according to the control of the microcomputer(108). When the audio is important, the VDR system(104) heightens the predetermined video compression rate, and lowers the predetermined audio compression rate according to the control of the microcomputer(108). The VDR system(104) compresses the video and the audio, and records the compressed video and audio in a recording medium.
