PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that an sorting apparatus charging an article to be sorted into a rotating sorting cylinder having sorting holes formed on its circumferential wall can sort accurately in an area with small sorting holes but cannot sort accurately in an area with large holes because small articles flow toward the outlet end of the sorting cylinder to overrun. SOLUTION: The apparatus for sorting an article such as a fruit is constituted of a sorting cylinder (2) equipped with a plurality of sorting areas each having sorting holes (1) of a different diameter ranging from a small one to a large one formed on its inner circumferential wall that sorts articles to be sorted by allowing them to flow in the direction of its downward slope and to pass through the sorting holes (1) on the rotating circumferential wall, and a restriction helix (3) that restricts articles being sorted from overrunning. The articles to be sorted charged inside the sorting cylinder (2) are caused to flow down by its rotation toward its bottom end of the downward slope while their flow-down speed is being restricted by the resistance of the restriction helix (3) and allowed to pass through the sorting holes (1), and thereby they are sorted according to their sizes. Small diameter articles are received by the back surface of the restriction helix (3) and restricted from overrunning, and thereby each of them is allowed to pass therethrough and accurately sorted at a position of a sorting hole (1) of a corresponding diameter.
