A data backup method is provided to back up data files, stored at a portable terminal, by using a charging device during charging operation or by using a communication device connected to a communication network. A data backup method comprises the following several steps. In case that a portable terminal is attached to a charging device, a microcomputer of a charger controls an operation of a power supply and enables a disk recorder while supplying charging power for the portable phone(S10). If there exists a newly updated data file, the microcomputer of the charger requests the transmission of the data file, and selectively receives the data file(S11). The microcomputer constructs a file system(S12) and performs a series of backup operations for recording the data file to an optical disk by controlling operations of the disk recorder(S13). If the microcomputer terminates the backup(S14), the microcomputer transmits a normal data file backup message to a microcomputer of the portable terminal, and the microcomputer of the portable terminal records a backup flag to the data file whose backup is terminated(S15). The microcomputer of the charger controls the disk recorder in a disable state(S16). If the portable terminal is detached from the charger(S17), the microcomputer of the charger switches to a power off mode and automatically backs up the newly updated data file to a recording medium like an optical disk(S18).
