PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner having a close-adhesion/pressing means of a choke plate for realizing a half-choke condition and preventing occurrence of unstable air leakage and erroneous operation, having functions for preventing breakage of parts, holding a breather valve, and holding a lead wire by connecting a case of the air cleaner with its cover securely without necessitating a tool, and having a simple configuration constituted by the minimum required number of parts. SOLUTION: This air cleaner for the compact engine is composed of the air cleaner case fixed to an air intake of a carburetor, the air cleaner cover engaging with the air cleaner case, a filter surrounded by the air cleaner case and the air cleaner cover to filter outside air taken into the air cleaner case, the resin-made choke plate fixed to one end of a rotary shaft attached to the air cleaner case rotatably and provided with an elastic protruding claw on a plate face integrally, and a choke valve means constituted by a choke lever fixed to the other end of the rotary shaft and an elastic protruding claw pushing-out rib of the choke plate provided in the air cleaner cover or the air cleaner case. When the choke plate is turned by operating the choke lever to block the air intake of the engine, the elastic protruding claw pushing-out rib pushes the elastic protruding claw of the choke plate so that the choke plate adheres closely to a seating face provided in the air cleaner case to push and block the air intake.
