PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an olefin oligomer, having high productivity. SOLUTION: The method for producing the olefin oligomer comprises the following steps: (1) a step for producing a contact product (1) by bringing a transition metal compound into contact with a compound represented by formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>A-G-AR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>(1); (2) a step for producing a contact product (2) by bringing an alumoxane compound into contact with an organoaluminum compound; and (3) a step for bringing the contact product (1) and the contact product (2) into contact with an olefin. (In the formula, As are the same or different and each a nitrogen atom, a phosphorus atom, an arsenic atom or an antimony atom; G is a divalent group; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each independently a hydrocarbon group, a halogenated hydrocarbon group, an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon group, a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon group, a selenium-containing hydrocarbon group or a tellurium-containing hydrocarbon group).
