A portable terminal for offering an image management function in accordance with whether to backup and a method thereof are provided to indicate a backup state of a corresponding image by using a backup field among header information of an image and to output an alarm message in case that the image is not backed up when the image gets deleted such that the image can be prevented from being deleted by fault. A portable terminal for offering an image management function in accordance with a backup or not comprises outputting units(14,18), a communication unit(11), a storage unit(12), inputting units(13,19), and a controller(16). The communication unit(11) transmits or receives data to or from an external device. The storage unit(12) stores various images including header information which indicates that the images are backed up or not. The inputting units(13,19) enable a user to input image backup related signals or image deletion related signals. The controller(16) transmits a backup version of a selected image to an external backup device via the communication unit(11) if the image backup related signal is received via the inputting units(13,19), changes the backup field among the header information of the image stored at the storage unit(12), determines whether a corresponding image is backed up if the image deletion related signal is received, and outputs an alarm message via the outputting units(14,18) if the image is not backed up.
