PURIFICATION OF 2-ETHYLHEXANOL AND 2-ETHYLHEXYL 2-ETHYLHEXANOATE FROM BY-PRODUCT IN 2-ETHYLHEXANOL PLANT

A process for purifying 2-ethylhexanol and 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexanoate from byproducts derived from a 2-ethylhexanol plant is provided to obtain high-purity 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexanoate useful as an additive for increasing viscosity stability and improving tensile strength and hardness of a PVC resin composition. The process comprises a step of passing byproducts of a plant where 2-ethylhexanol is produced via aldol condensation and hydrogenation of butyl aldehyde through two multi-stage distillation columns so as to recover 2-ethylhexanol and 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexanoate. The byproduct comprises 100 parts by weight of 2-ethylhexanol, 2-6 parts by weight of butyl aldehyde trimer, 7-12 parts by weight of 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexanoate and 0.01-0.3 parts by weight of high-boiling point components. The byproduct is passed through a first distillation column(1) to recover 2-ethylhexanol, and the reside is passed through a second distillation column(3) under a pressure of 10-100 torr at 150-200 deg.C to recover 2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexanoate.
