Method for in vitro diagnosis, risk assessment and/or progression monitoring of sepsis or generalized inflammation comprises determining, in a patient sample, (i) the content of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and/or its derivatives and (ii) whether this content is above/below a control level, so that conclusions can be drawn about presence, progression and/or results of treatment of the specified conditions. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) use of IgM to prepare antibodies (Ab) for use (a) in the new method and (b) for treating sepsis; and (2) kit for the new process that contains components able to react specifically with IgM or its derivatives.
