Absorbent sheet (10) comprising fiber material (11) and highly absorbent polymer particles (12). The particles (12) are disposed in a fashion held by the fiber material (11) and dispersed along the direction of thickness of sheet (10), which particles (12) are not substantially exposed on the surface of the sheet (10). At least some of the particles (12) on the periphery thereof are provided with airspace (13) of size sufficient to absorb any increment of volume attributed to swell occurring upon liquid absorption by the particles (12). Preferably, the highly absorbent polymer particles (12) have a particle size distribution in which particles of 250 µm or greater diameter occupy 40% or more on a weight basis.
