A separation membrane washing composition comprising at least an acid, a compound capable of forming a complex with a metal ion and an oxidizing agent. Preferably, the acid comprises hydrochloric acid, the compound comprises glycine, and the oxidizing agent comprises hydrogen peroxide. The composition enables to decompose and remove a slime produced by a microorganism attached on the surface of the separation membrane or on the inner wall of pores of the membrane or the like and can also remove a metal salt by converting the metal salt into a metal chelate compound.
