<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus, an image display apparatus and an image processing method which can suppress unnatural variation in image quality due to image processing. <P>SOLUTION: A luminance distribution detecting circuit 21 in a gain generating section 2 detects luminance distribution based on histogram distribution of YUV signals (Yin, Uin and Vin) to be output from a switch 14. Further, a distribution limiter 22 limits frequency values of luminance distribution data Hin to a dispersion threshold Lim or low, thereby relaxing distribution concentration to a specific luminance level to perform equalization processing.
