摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To previously predict operation stability after adjusting ignition timing when adjusting ignition timing in an ignition timing control device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Supposed ignition timing SAi advanced more than the present ignition timing SAc is assumed (step 118). Cylinder pressure history data under the supposed ignition timing SAi are created by a significant number of cycles (step 120). Based on the cylinder pressure history data, knocking cycle frequencies under the supposed ignition timing SAi are predicted (step 134). Based on the predicted knocking cycle frequencies, ignition timing is set to approximate MBT (minimum advance for best torque) within a range not causing knocking (steps 150-158).
