PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emulsion type defoaming agent hard to cause a change in the viscosity of an emulsion or the separation of the emulsion caused by a change in temperature, keeping its excellent properties over a long period of time and containing a higher alcohol and/or a fatty acid ester as a defoaming agent component. SOLUTION: The emulsion type defoaming agent contains 5-60 wt.% of at least one of a 12-30C higher alcohol and an ester of a 1-30C alcohol and a 12-30C fatty acid and further contains at least one kind of a compound represented by the general formula (a) in an amount of 2-20 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the higher alcohol and/or the fatty acid ester. In the formula (a), R<SB>1</SB>is either one of an aryl group, an alkyl group, an aryl group having 2-6 benzene rings, anα,β-naphthalene group, a lanoline group and a rosin group, R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are hydrogen or a methyl group, one of R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>and one of them is necessarily hydrogen in a case that one of them is the methyl group and m and n are 5-50.
