[Problems] To execute an updating operation or the like of an index file concerning the change in a hierarchical structure, simply and quickly. [Means for Solving the Problems] The index file is also recorded together with a contents file in a recording medium (2). The index file is generated on the basis of the contents file and the attribute information of a folder containing that contents file. The contents file and the folder form a hierarchical structure having the folder in a high hierarchy. The index file has a predetermined number of entries (or management information areas) individually corresponding to the contents file and the folder. In a first entry corresponding to the folder of a high hierarchy, there is disposed in a list form the second index information which indicates a second entry corresponding to the folder or the contents file positioned in the low hierarchy than the folder of the high hierarchy. At the second entry, there is disposed the first index information indicating the first entry.
