An RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) interrogator and a data communication method are provided to autonomously reduce the interference while receiving a signal from an RFID tag. A carrier sense processor(108) detects an empty channel among a plurality of channels used in the communication with the RFID tag. A transmitter(110) transmits the signal to the RFID tag by using the detected empty channel. An error processor(109) detects a communication error from the communication with the RFID tag. A controller(105) interrupts transmission to the RFID tag, detects again the empty channel after a predetermined transmission pause time, and transmits the signal to the RFID tag by using the detected empty channel if the communication error is detected. The controller includes a changer changing timeout time depending on transmission priority for the RFID tag. The error detector detects the communication error if the communication error is continued for the timeout time.
