PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser device which can effectively prevent a semiconductor light emitting element such as a VCSEL from electrostatic discharge damage. SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser device includes a mesa 20 for a VCSEL formed on a substrate 12, and a plurality of dummy mesas 30 to 36 arranged around the mesa 20. A metal ball 60 formed by a wire bonding step and a constant length of wire 62 connected thereto are formed on the top of the dummy mesa. The mesas 30 to 36 having such metal balls 60 and the wires 62 function as projections for preventing electrostatic discharge damage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
