PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a start controller for an internal combustion engine capable of completing scavenging operation in a short time and achieving high efficiency of scavenging operation. SOLUTION: When scavenging operation is performed after start fail occurs, valve timing of an intake valve 2A is shifted to a retard angle side by an electric VVT to set closing timing of the intake valve 2A to be late. Consequently, when scavenging cranking operation is performed, large air stream advancing toward an intake passage 2 from the inside of a cylinder accompanying with contraction of volume in the cylinder due to rise of a piston is generated to eliminate a wet state of an ignition plug 30 quickly.
