PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent substance which allows the selection of an irradiating light for excitation for improving brightness while maintaining color purity. SOLUTION: The fluorescent substance has a composition represented by (Sr<SB>(1-x-y)</SB>Ca<SB>x</SB>Ba<SB>y</SB>)(Ga<SB>(1-m-n)</SB>Al<SB>m</SB>In<SB>n</SB>)<SB>a</SB>S<SB>4</SB>:Eu, wherein Eu concentration is made to be 1 mol% to 9 mol%, 0≤x≤1, 0≤y≤1 and x+y≤1, 0≤m≤1, 0≤n≤1 and m+n≤1, and a main wave length band in excitation is selected from either a first wave length band with a reference wave length or less or a second wave length band with a reference wave length or over depending or the value of "a".
