The luggage compartment protective device in a motor vehicle has a housing (1) in which is mounted a winding shaft for a flexible fabric, and with fastening means (2) for securing the housing in a functioning position. At least one locking component is provided for the fastening means and between a locking position blocking the fastening means in its fastening position inside a mounting (3,4) on the vehicle side and a neutral position out of engagement with the fastening means is mounted to move in the vehicle's longitudinal direction in such a way that strong longitudinal accelerations of the vehicle lead to displacement of the locking component into the locking position.
