Provided is a method for degrading nitrile rubbers by metathesis, which is carried out by using a proper catalyst, hardly causes gelation, and exhibits improved storage stability of the catalyst in a solution. The method for degrading nitrile rubbers by metathesis consists of subjecting nitrile rubbers to metathesis in the presence of a catalyst represented by the following formula(I). In the formula, M is ruthenium or osmium, X^1 and X^2 are identical to or different from each other and each is an anionic ligand, R^1, R^2, and R^3 are identical to or different from another and each is an organic radical, Im is a substituted or unsubstituted imidazolidine radical, and A is an anion.
