PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering column having high practicality. SOLUTION: The steering column 10 is composed of a stationary part and a movable part where a shaft 102 is installed on one of them and an engaging piece 104 to engage with the shaft 302 is installed on the other, and the movable part is moved relative to a vehicle body by putting the shaft 102 and the engaging piece 104 in relative movement in the set moving direction, and also the shaft 102 is made able to make shrinkage when a set load is applied to the shaft 102 in the set moving direction, wherein further a shaft shrinkage resistance generating device 130 is provided to generate a resistance against shrinkage of the shaft 102 in such a way as able to change the size of the resistance. This allows, for example changing into the size corresponding to the impact size of the secondary collision, by changing the size of the resistance against shrinkage of the shaft 102 functioning as an impact absorbing load to the secondary collision of the driver, and an effective relief of impact can be established.
