<p>The system has a connected exhaust cooling device (10) with a heat exchanger (14) provided in an exhaust tract between a main exhaust duct (21) and a catalyst arrangement. The heat exchanger is connected at a utilization point of the exhaust tract by a feed exhaust duct (11) and at feedback connection using a feed back duct (16) to the exhaust tract. A precatalytic converter and a main catalyst are provided as the catalyst arrangement. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating the device for the exhaust system.</p>
