The apparatus includes a reference container (22) with a gas reference chamber (24) of a known reference volume. This can be connected to the gas chamber of the tank (14). A switch device (30) switches between a gas exchange connection between the gas chamber of the tank and the gas reference chanber and a separation between the chambers. A pressure sensor (46) measures the pressure in the tank chamber (20) and in a mixing chamber (54) when gas is exchanged between the chambers. Independent claims also cover a method of measuring the fullness of a tank.
