PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a graphite nanofiber having a controlled structure on a base material. SOLUTION: The method comprises depositing a graphite nanofiber on the surface of a base material by a chemical vapor deposition method using a carbon atom-containing gas, wherein at least the surface layer of the base material is comprised of an Fe-containing metal catalyst layer having a crystal orientation of (001), (111), (110), (211) or (310).
