PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode discharge lamp which can improve dark starting characteristics and prevent fall of a light flux at a lamp lighting passage of time, and provide a backlight unit and a liquid crystal television. SOLUTION: The external electrode discharge lamp 100 is provided with external electrodes 102, 103 on an end part 101a of a glass bulb having a discharging space inside, and a protective layer 104 and a phosphor layer 105 are formed in this order on the inside of the glass bulb 101. The glass bulb 101 is made of a glass material containing a Na oxide in a range of 3% or more and 20% or less and the protective layer 104 is formed by a component containing either Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, MgO, or La<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>of a maximum thickness of 0.5μm to 2μm, and there exists an area where the protective layer 104 is not formed on an inside of the end part of the glass bulb 101.
