PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon whose surface is modified and suitable for an industrial application and to provide a carbon, such as CNT, capable of being stably dispersed in various solvents. SOLUTION: The carbon is manufactured by irradiating a multilayered carbon nanotube having an asymmetric molecular structure with a microwave for≤30 min in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite, and the surface of the carbon is modified with a carboxy group or a carbonyl group-containing functional group derived from the carboxy group (such as haloformyl group, alkylamide group).
