<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly switch without producing knocking when a combustion mode is switched from a spark ignition combustion to a compressed ignition combustion according to operating conditions. <P>SOLUTION: When a request to switch from the spark ignition combustion to the compression ignition combustion is given, the heating of intake air is started by an intake heating device while continuing the spark ignition combustion. An EGR rate is increased according to the rise of the temperature of the intake air by heating to prevent knocking from occurring.
