PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a modified water absorbent resin excellent in water absorbancy. SOLUTION: The method for producing the modified water absorbent resin comprises (a) mixing a water absorbent resin with a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator without adding any ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (b) irradiating the obtained mixture with an actinic radiation.
