PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform modification of an escalator while ensuring convenience of a user. SOLUTION: In modification of a parallel type escalator in which a pair of escalators of an ascending first escalator and a descending second escalator e2 provided in a lateral row, a newly provided third escalator e3 is provided on a periphery of an installation part of the pair of escalators in the state that it is crossed in an inclination direction of the pair of escalators and a pair of liftable temporary escalators is constituted by any one of the first escalator or the second escalator e2 and the third escalator e3. The other of the first escalator or the second escalator e2 is modified as a fourth escalator e4 and if the fourth escalator e4 is completed, operation is switched so as to constitute a pair of new escalators 6 by the third escalator e3 and the fourth escalator e4 and one of the first escalator or the second escalator e2 is removed.
