This invention provides a magnetic disk having a structure comprising a substrate layer provided between a glass substrate and a magnetic layer. The substrate layer comprises a metallic amorphous substrate layer provided on the glass substrate side and a body-centered cubic structure substrate layer provided on the magnetic layer side. The metallic amorphous substrate layer and the body-centered cubic structure substrate layer each may be formed of a plurality of layers, and a surface oxide layer is preferably provided on the surface of a metallic amorphous substrate layer. According to the above construction, the ratio between the residual magnetization in the circumferential direction of the magnetic disk and the residual magnetization in the radial direction of the magnetic disk can be brought to not less than 1, and the SN ratio can be improved.
