A system for transmitting data of an external memory installed at a mobile communication terminal which offers an IrDa function and a method thereof are provide to enhance usage rate of an IrDa function in the mobile communication terminal by offering convenience in transmitting data, stored at the external memory of one mobile communication terminal, to other mobile communication terminal. A method for transmitting data of an external memory installed at a mobile communication terminal which offers an IrDa function comprises the following several steps. A signal for executing an IrDa application is received from a user and the IrDa application is executed(S300). The IrDa application searches for data stored at a transmission side external memory, and displays a searched data list on a screen of a transmission side mobile communication terminal(S302). A data transmission request signal is received from the user(S304). The transmission side mobile communication terminal, which receives the data transmission request, transmits the data to a receipt side external memory and displays data file names and transmission rate on the screen of the transmission side mobile communication terminal(S306).
