<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the heating efficiency by sufficiently carrying out heat conduction to a material to be treated in a heating passage and to improve the yield in production of a carbonized material by carrying out carbonization by dry distillation without directly heating the material to be treated with a combustion gas in a heating apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus is obtained as follows. A tubular columnar body 1 is passed through a rotatable cylindrical body 10 which is then passed through a rotatable outer cylindrical body 20. The heating passage Rh for sandwiching the material W which is fed from a hopper 13 to be treated so that the material W to be treated can be moved is formed between the outer surface of the columnar body 1 and the inner surface of the cylindrical body 10. The cylindrical body 10 is equipped with a screw flight 51 for moving the material W to be treated toward an outlet 12 of the heating passage Rh and a burner apparatus 61 for supplying the combustion gas to the interior of the columnar body 1 is installed.
