In a UMTS base station, system information data packets (system information blocks or SIBs) received from a logical channel have associated prioritization information used to indicate the priority of the respective packet. From these packets system information medium access control (MAC) protocol messages are generated taking into account the prioritization information. By prioritizing at the level of the MAC protocol layer when mapping these messages onto a transport channel, static or slow changing system information can be given priority on a secure mobile radio channel, and dynamic or fast changing system information can be distributed flexibly using available subcarriers and transmission time intervals or not transmitted at all when there is insufficient bandwidth. A first (static) system information MAC protocol message may contain a statement indicating how a second (dynamic) system information MAC protocol message is to be transmitted, for example the frequency band or time slot. |
