<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminating device capable of avoiding occurrence of a marked bright spot by light of a 0th order and capable of obtaining uniform illuminating light, and to provide an image display device using the illuminating device. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminating device 1 is used for the image display device which has a light-modulation device 10 for modulating light emitted from a light source device 2. The illuminating device 1 includes: a diffraction optical element 4K on which the light emitted from the light source device 2 is made incident, which generates diffraction light L2 from the incident light and illuminates the light-modulation device 10 with the diffraction light L2; and a light shielding member 5 disposed between the diffraction optical element 4K and the light-modulation device 10 and used for shielding the light of the 0th order emitted to the light-modulation device 10. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
