The method involves setting a value, which is based on a signal (26) of a sensor (22) that detects pressure in a combustion chamber (14a) of a set of combustion chambers (14a-14e). Another value, which is based on signals of impact sound sensors (24a - 24c), is set, where the signals of sensors (24a - 24c) depend on the pressure distribution in one of the chambers. The values depend on the pressure distribution in the chamber (14a), or based on the chambers (14d, 14e). A drift of the sound sensors is determined from a temporal change of the latter value compared to the former value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing a method of operating an internal combustion engine (2) an electrical storage medium for a control-and-regulation device of an internal combustion engine (3) a control-and-regulation device for an internal combustion engine to execute a method for operating the engine.
