An evaluation unit (6), connected to an activation unit (7), has an input (3) and output (4) connected to the thermistor of a consumer load. The evaluation unit evaluates the working condition e.g. impedance condition, of the thermistor during power-on of the consumer load, and, together with the activation unit, provides activation/deactivation to the thermistor based on evaluation result. The activation/deactivation condition is stored in a non-volatile memory. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting an electrical consumer load from overloading.
