The invention relates to an enzyme-free cleaning product concentrate containing at least 10 wt. % of at least one alkanolamine is used for effectively and gently cleaning surgical instruments. The cleaning product can be used in a cleaning process having the following steps: (a) applying an aqueous solution of 0.5 to 100 % cleaning product concentrate on the instruments, (b) allowing the solution to act at a temperature from 20° C to boiling temperature of the solution, (c) rinsing.
