PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which space saving and cost reduction are achieved by detecting presence or absence of a cartridge without using a mechanical detection means, and to provide an image reader equipped with that printer. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a first means 101 for detecting a drive voltage applied from a driver IC 100 for driving a cartridge (head unit) 35, a voltage division circuit 102 including resistors R1 and R2 for dividing a voltage detected by the first means 101, and a second means 104 including a transistor 103 being turned on/off with the voltage (divided voltage) at the voltage dividing point (a) of the voltage division circuit 102 wherein presence or absence of the cartridge 35 is detected by state transition of a cartridge detection signal from the second means 104.
