PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens with a reduced size and a simplified optical system structure having fewer lens groups, a tight structure, a long back focal length with various aberrations easily corrected, and having high image resolution and being low in cost. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes a first lens group 1 of negative refractive power, a second lens group 2 of positive refractive power and an aperture stop in order from an object side to an image side. The first lens group 1 is disposed at a position near the object side. The first lens group 1 and the object side defines a first variable distance therebetween and the second lens group 2 and the first lens group 1 defines a second variable distance therebetween. During zooming from the telephoto end to the wide-angle end, the second lens group 2 moves toward the image side from the object side and the second variable distance between the first lens group 1 and the second lens group 2 decreases.
