PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that spurious increases depending on the position of the boundary since the boundary between the vibrating part and the peripheral part of a mesa type crystal oscillator is clearly divided by the level difference. SOLUTION: The mesa type crystal oscillator is provided with a crystal substrate having a rectangular external shape, which is surrounded in the peripheral part and has a vibrating part whose thickness size is larger than that of the peripheral part, and a rectangular excitation electrode which is arranged on the front surface of the vibrating part and has a smaller area than that of the vibrating part. When the long side of the vibrating part is parallel with the long side of the crystal substrate and the size is set to Mx and the long side of the excitation electrode is parallel with the long side of crystal substrate and the size is set to Ex, the mesa type crystal oscillator with less spurious can be provided by constituting so that the values satisfy the specific conditions.
