<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face detector using templates for enhancing the resemblance. <P>SOLUTION: The templates are created from person's average faces which are grouped according to characters and a database DB of the plurality of templates is created in advance. An image including a person's face is picked up by a camera (Step S31), and face detection is performed by applying in parallel the templates f<SB>A</SB>, f<SB>B</SB>, f<SB>C</SB>of the database DB to digital data of the acquired image (Steps S33-S35). The maximum resemblance max (S<SB>A</SB>, S<SB>B</SB>, S<SB>C</SB>)=S<SB>max</SB>is determined from each maximum resemblance S<SB>A</SB>, S<SB>B</SB>, S<SB>C</SB>determined from the face detection (Step S36), and it is determined that the face detection is completed if S<SB>max</SB>>T (T is a face-non-face determination threshold) and that the face detection fails if S<SB>max</SB>≤T (Step S37).
